Basilica Hudson wedding photos are proof that you can throw a funky wedding in the Catskills without being in a barn. Basilica Hudson is a unique wedding venue in Upstate New York along the Hudson River. Deb and Christina’s wedding made the most of the festive atmosphere of the Basilica Hudson to throw a great party and honor their LGBTQIA+ community.
As a non-traditional wedding venue in the Catskill Mountains, Basilica Hudson stands out from the crowd. The building, now occupied by a public arts non-profit, was first a factory built in the 1880s. It served as an industrial building for over a hundred years. This history is still evident in its minimalist floors and decor. Now using solar power, the arts center honors the building’s history and charm while bringing contemporary aesthetics and pops of color.
There are multiple options for ceremony and reception spaces at the Basilica Hudson. The Main Hall, the most popular room for weddings, has towering ceilings and tall windows. The natural light is lovely for daytime ceremonies. At night, market lights and mirror balls warm the hall with a celebratory glow. Light reflecting off mirror balls transforms the brick walls into a starry sky.
The exposed brick walls add character to the space and remind wedding guests of the building’s history. It’s also easy to set any tone with your decorations against this neutral backdrop. Floral arches and large plants are popular ways to set the ceremony space apart. Additionally, check out the way plants and a chuppah with natural wood transform the industrial space into a little oasis in Deb and Christina’s Basilica Hudson wedding photos.
The Main Hall of the Basilica Hudson also features a leveled floor. There are no bad seats! Anyone can see the ceremony without craning their necks. Better yet, guests get to watch the wedding ceremony from colorful, mismatched vintage chairs. The effect is lively and goes well with a wedding as vibrant as Deb and Christina’s.
One of the most unexpected and fun features of the venue is that there’s no cut off time. Reception dance parties can last well past the normal “after party” hours. Deb and Christina, whose Basilica Hudson wedding photos are featured here, danced until 4 a.m.!
One perk of a Basilica Hudson wedding is the venue’s proximity to the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park. Rocks, driftwood, and flowering shrubs create layers of color and texture by the water. It’s easy to get chic, modern-looking photos indoors and portraits with a more relaxed, natural vibe by the riverside.
Deb and Christina’s Busilica Hudson ceremony took place on the first of June because they wanted to celebrate their LGBTQIA+ wedding all Pride Month long! Both are avid dancers, and Basilica Hudson’s lack of closing time meant they got to throw their dream party.
Deb and Christina live in Washington, D.C., where they met through mutual friends. They liked that Basilica Hudson offered a modern aesthetic within the natural beauty of the Catskill Mountains.
Deb and Christina cared more about their guests than the details. They still managed to create a unique experience through their ceremony and reception details. To set the tone for a fun and affirming wedding, their friends gifted them a sign reading “Our Pronouns are We.”
Glitter was the theme! How could the ceremony and reception not be full of smiles? The couple’s niece served as their “glitter girl” in lieu of a flower girl, and guests had confetti cannons for the recessional. Cups of glitter were passed around the dance floor and served as a photo booth prop.
Deb and Christina wanted a non-traditional wedding in the Catskill Mountains. However, they did include some traditional elements that tied them to their families of origin. The chuppah was a beautiful tribute to Deb’s late mom who embroidered it with their families’ names. During the reception, guests lifted up the couple for the horah – always a favorite moment!
Basilica Hudson’s lack of cut off time was perfect for Christina, Deb, and their friends. They all love to dance, and the party didn’t slow down until the early hours of the morning!
